Our Kaahu Kids Story

Our name, Kaahu Kids, is inspired by our local maunga, Mount Kaahu at Whakamaru and the harrier hawk — Kaahu — sacredly known in Māori tradition as Messenger of the Skies. We want our stories to inspire readers to share the positive messages.

Our youngest son, Tama, was born with Pura Syndrome, a rare condition that brings many physical challenges. Although he is non-verbal, he speaks volumes through his eyes, smiles and cues. His quiet resilience and sparkling positivity inspired a story that changed our world.

Our Journey

  • Why I Write

Like most mums, I want my children to grow up happy, kind and confident — to chase their dreams and be proud of who they are. I believe reading empowers learning and can grow goodness. I hope our books create a feeling of positivity in every child, inspiring them to be and do their best.

  • The Story of Rare Special Powers

One morning in 2024, after dropping Tama at school, I was driving home when a story suddenly came to me. I had the strongest feeling I needed to write it down, so I stopped the car and scribbled it down on a paper bag! I knew right then that this message was important and needed to be shared. I’d never planned to write a children’s book, but this one insisted on being told!

  • Bringing the Book to Life

With encouragement from my family and friends, and the beautiful illustrations of Shannon Brocas, our first book — Rare Special Powers and the Magic of True Friends — was created. Many of the illustrations show scenes from our hometown villages of Whakamaru and Mangakino.

Inspiring Heart. Sparking Hope. Raising Heroes!

We believe our powerful stories can nurture the goodness in every child,
encouraging them to rise as messengers, like the great Kaahu hawk, sharing love and positivity with the world.
